About Us

Who Am I?

My name is Kathryn and I love teaching piano! I have been playing piano since I was 5 years old, and have 15 years teaching experience. I have a music degree from UC Berkeley and have studied with a wide range of piano instructors, including Dr. Bell of Juilliard. Over the years I’ve immersed myself in assorted types of piano-related work, in addition to teaching. These musical jobs range from being a professional accompanist for the Unified School District, to playing gigs, and even performing my own compositions. I’ve composed for various ensembles and multiple virtuoso musicians in the Bay Area, as well as commercial advertising for private business owners. Music is a huge part of my life and I am passionate about sharing this joy with others. I take pride in personalizing each lesson to fit the individual needs and goals of each student.

What I do?

Services Offered

PRIVATE PIANO LESSONS

I come to you! This is not only for your convenience, but so I can personalize your lessons based on the type of piano/keyboard you have to work with. I can offer or recommend various supplemental resources personalized to your educational needs, skill sets, and individual interests.

PRICES & PAYMENT

My prices are $60 for a half hour lesson and $85 for an hour lesson. Payments are made on a monthly (4 week) basis. New students may pay for their initial set of 4 lessons by week. I prefer cash payment, with some exceptions. Existing students that provide referrals will receive a set of 4 lessons at half price, after the referred student has completed their first set of 4 lessons. New students may qualify for a discount rate that can be applied to 1 or more lessons. Occasional coupons or promotions will be offered on my website.

CANCELLATION & RESCHEDULING

Students are expected to attend all lessons, as there are no refunds*. Missed lessons must be accounted for in advance and rescheduled with prior notice. I will do my very best to accommodate the rescheduling of lessons.

*In rare instances, cancellations may be made a week in advance for a refund. Only one cancellation is refundable per 4 week period. In situations of emergency, please notify me for a possible exception.

What To Expect

Your First Lesson

  • I come to you!
  • During your first lesson we will be spending some time getting to know each other. We will go over my terms of service, and personalize your lesson plan.
  • You do not need to bring anything to your first lesson, except for a pencil (with an eraser).
  • I will provide your first set of books free of charge. This includes a lesson book with the pieces you will be learning to play, and a theory book (work book) for you to complete handwritten exercises as assigned. Students who already have some level of experience may be evaluated in person, so that I can select what level of books will be most suitable for that student.
  • I will bring a personal lesson log folder for you to keep and reference. I will update your lesson folder during each lesson by recording what specifically to work on each week.
  • If you have any experience with the piano already, it is a good idea to prepare something to share with me (whether it be a piece you have learned or written, scales, or just note identification). When you share your skills with me, I can better assess how to help you move forward and build on your existing knowledge.
  • First lessons often run over the scheduled time (especially for half hour lessons). Please plan with some flexibility in mind when prepping for our first lesson.

I look forward to meeting with you!
